Regional Volunteer Websites
Finding genealogical records on-line is increasingly easier as time goes on. With the help of many (thousands..??) of volunteers, records are rapidly being placed on-line at many personal sites as well as regional volunteer websites. One such site is USGenWeb. The USGenWeb is, in my opinion, the largest of these organizations at this time with all States covered and many/most of the Counties covered as well. The Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database was started in 1996 by a group of genealogists, the leader being Jeff Murphy. The Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database evolved into the KYGenWeb Project. By June of 1996, other volunteers decided they would like to get other States on-line. The USGenWeb was born. If you are interested in helping with the USGenWeb please go to your State of interest, then your County of interest and contact the County Coordinator. If your County doesn’t have a coordinator consider adopting the site!
The American History and Genealogy Project (AHGP) was started in 2000. I have been unable to find just who was involved in the early beginnings of this project, but I have found it to be quite impressive. The layout is similar to USGenWeb, but the set-up is quite different. By set-up, I mean the *political* side of it. Why should this interest the average genealogist? It probably won’t interest most, it’s just a point I thought I’d make. ;-)
The American Local History Network (ALHN) was apparently started at about the same time and by the same people as the AHGP. It’s a little different from the others, as it’s more concerned with history…you know, the leaves on the branches of our family trees.
Migrations was created in 1999 by Patrick Hayes. At Migrations.org you can search for your ancestors migration across the United States. This site seems like it could be very useful, but, unfortunately, I haven’t been able to further my research with this site. I can see where this site could grow in to something quite amazing. Keep up the good work Patrick!
Well..I believe that’s all for tonight. I’m getting quite sleepy and I still have a couple of sites to update. Not to mention the fact that I have two sick little girls who are in need of my attention!
Have a great ancestor hunting day!
Happy Hunting!
