When a tombstone is difficult to read, try placing aluminum foil over the lettering. Press gently with your fingers around each of the letters until you can read it.
This keeps from damaging the tombstone.

What a great tip. I am going to try it in the field very soon. There are a couple of stones which have defied reading in every other way.
