List of Officers and
Soldiers of the 66th Indiana now in Camp near
Louisville, and Partial Lists of the Killed, Wounded, and Paroled.
To the Editors of the New Albany Ledger:
Gentlemen: Herewith I send a complete list of all the 66th regiment, and company B (from Washington county) of the 16th regiment Indiana volunteers, now in camp near Louisville.
The names were furnished by H. A. Peck, Esq., and myself, by Lieut. Col. Martin, Dr. Bear, and the officers and men now in camp, and are entirely correct.
The men have rested twenty-four hours, and are in good health and spirits, and ready for any work that comes to hand.
Some of the officers and privates are of opinion that stragglers have greatly exaggerated the loss in killed and wounded, thus causing great alarm and anxiety. It is the universal opinion that the killed and wounded will be vastly less than friends at home have been led to believe by idle and highly colored reports.
All accounts concur in saying that our boys fought manfully, and acquitted themselves with great credit. They are true men, good men, and just such as can be relied on at all times.
There is a feeling of regret, and with a few a stronger feeling, that Gen. Nelson has not in his brief published note done them justice.
It is understood that Capt. J. F. Baird, of company A, with 320 paroled men of the 66th, has arrived at Cincinnati. The friends of the 66th may rest assured that as soon as the names of all the men of the regiment can be obtained they will be published.
To those having friends in the regiment whose names are not embraced in the list herewith published, I would say that, although the fight was a desperate one, and against large odds, and while men now in camp can show one, two, and three bulletholes in their clothing, and bullet marks on their persons, yet I am satisfied that the killed and dangerously wounded will be much smaller than has been represented; and more, and of greater importance, the wounded wanderers and prisoners are receiving every possible attention and comfort.
Gov. Morton has his agents at all points, and is using great energy in caring and providing for our men.
The men are daily arriving at camp, and doubtless scores of them are wandering in the Kentucky hills, and will turn up all right in a few days.
Yours —W. C. Depauw.
